Why Cape Breton Island

Our Cape Breton Island

We are often asked this question. There are endless reasons but of the main reasons we are here is definitely the people and their friendly mentality. They are incredibly nice and helpful. Even if you don’t know each other, you are still greeted with a smile. Cape Breton Island has so much to offer that we have put together just a few of our personal highlights for you on this page.

“Come and see for yourself” – Cape Breton Island and the people that call this amazing island home have to be met and experienced.

The most beautiful Coastal Road in the World - der Cabot Trail

We have already mentioned the most beautiful coastal road in the world – the Cabot Trail. It leads into the Cape Breton Highlands National Park, which impresses with its untouched nature. There are countless hiking trails in the national park, some of which offer breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and the ocean. We have also already mentioned the Bras d’Or Lake. But Cape Breton Island offers so much more. Cape Breton Island is an insider tip not only among sailors but also among golfers.

There are several golf resorts here, and 3 of Canada’s 5 best golf courses are right here on the Island. And for all winter sports enthusiasts there are two phenomenal ski resorts, where you can wonderfully make your way down the slopes with a view of the sea or the Bras d’Or Lake.

The history of Cape Breton Islands

Cape Breton Island also offers a lot of interesting history. The Fortress of Louisburg (National Historic Site) is definitely a sight. Part of this French fortress was rebuilt and reconstructed in the 1970s after its destruction in the 18th century and is now a “living” museum. Another highlight is the Alexander Graham Bell Museum in Baddeck, which is absolutely worth seeing, especially for the kids.

North America's first single Malt Whisky Distillery

Cape Breton Island also has a lot to offer in culinary terms. In addition to some amazing local breweries, you will also find the Glenora Inn and Distillery – North America’s first single malt whiskey distillery. You will also find what we call farmers’ markets in the summer months (and sometimes even all year round), where you can buy seasonal fresh fruit and vegetables, meat, herbs, maple syrup and much more directly from local producers.

Activities on Cape Breton Island

And of course, the activities on Cape Breton Island are endless. During the summer you can swim, surf, canoe or kayak, sail, dive, fish, SUP, ride a bike, hike, etc. There is also a lot to do in winter: skiing, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, ice fishing or snowmobiling. And after an eventful day, nothing beats sitting on the beach at night watching the sunset…
